    American League Game Capsules

    (Thursday, September 2nd)

Final Score: New York 5, Oakland 0

Bronx, NY (Sports Network) - CC Sabathia became baseball's first 19-game winner with a one-hitter over eight innings as the Yankees completed a four- game sweep of Oakland with a 5-0 win. Sabathia (19-5) now has a streak of 21 unbeaten starts at home, during which time he's gone 16-0. The streak dates back to July 18, 2009 and is the longest in franchise history since Ron Guidry posted 16 straight winning decisions at home in 1985-86. The 19 wins matches a career high for Sabathia, who has done it three times and for consecutive years. The stout lefty yielded only a Mark Ellis single in the second inning, issued three walks and struck out five to win his sixth straight start dating back to an August 1 loss to Tampa Bay. New York ran its win streak to six games -- the longest streak since a seven-game run from July 3-9 -- while increasing its lead over the idle Rays atop the American League East standings to 1 1/2 games. Curtis Granderson hit two home runs and drove in three after entering the game in the second inning for Nick Swisher, who developed stiffness in his left knee. Jorge Posada opened the scoring with a solo blast in the second. It was the Yankees' first four-game sweep of Oakland since September 5-8, 1985.

Final Score: Boston 6, Baltimore 4

Baltimore, MD (Sports Network) - David Ortiz drove in a pair of runs and Adrian Beltre homered as Boston used an early burst of offense to down Baltimore, 6-4, in the rubber match of a three-game set from Camden Yards. Mike Lowell finished with two hits and an RBI for the Red Sox, who took the final two games in the series after losing three in a row. Daisuke Matsuzaka (9-4) went 5 2/3 innings for the win, allowing four runs on six hits with six strikeouts. Matt Wieters went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and drove in two for the Orioles, who had won four in a row before dropping the final games in the set. Brad Bergesen (6-10) lasted 5 1/3 innings in the setback, charged with eight hits and five runs (two earned) while walking five and fanning four.

Final Score: Detroit 10, Minnesota 9 (13 innings)

Minneapolis, MN (Sports Network) - Gerald Laird's 13th-inning home run was the difference, as the Detroit Tigers pulled out a 10-9 victory over the Minnesota Twins in the finale of a three-game series. Laird's blast was one of five Tigers home runs, as Don Kelly, Jhonny Peralta and Ryan Raburn also went deep. Casper Wells hit his first career homer to tie the contest in the ninth inning for Detroit, which had dropped the first two games of this set. Wells was batting in the lineup spot of first baseman Miguel Cabrera, who left the game in the sixth inning with left biceps tendinitis. Jose Valverde (2-3) gave up an unearned run in the 11th inning, but pitched the final three frames to get the win. Nick Blackburn (8-9), who was scheduled to start Friday for the Twins, gave up Laird's homer and took the loss.

Final Score: Cleveland 6, Seattle 3

Seattle, WA (Sports Network) - Shin-Soo Choo tied a career-high by driving in five runs, as he stroked a three-run double in the sixth inning and added a two-run homer in the ninth, boosting the Indians to a 6-3 win over Seattle to open a four-game series. Josh Tomlin (3-3) allowed seven hits and three runs over six innings for the Indians, who posted their sixth straight win at Safeco Field. The Indians also snapped a four-game overall skid. Russell Branyan belted a two-run homer for the Mariners, who lost for the ninth time in 12 contests. Doug Fister (4-11) yielded seven hits and four runs over 5 1/3 innings in defeat.
